With the world projected to need about half a billion jobs in the
coming decades, young entrepreneurs should be encouraged, educated and
empowered, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the General Assembly on Wednesday.
Speaking during a debate on entrepreneurship for development, Mr. Ban
pointed out that the current generation of young people is the largest
in history.
He said investing in them can transform the world.
"Too many young people are caught up in conflicts, languishing in
poverty or struggling just to eat. We have to provide them with a
peaceful, secure environment where they can cultivate their skills and
contribute to society. Let us do everything possible to nurture young
people and open their prospects for the future."
Mr. Ban also told the story of a young woman from Kenya who grew up
in a slum and started a recycling programme, eventually creating 500
jobs.
He said this was an example of how entrepreneurship can transform
unemployed youth into employers, while also finding solutions to
sustainable development challenges.
